Downdip Development of the Ni-Cu-PGE-Bearing Mafic to Ultramafic Uitkomst Complex, Mpumalanga Province, South Africa

The about 2055-Ma-old mafic to ultramafic Uitkomst Complex in the Mpumalanga Province of South Africa hosts low-grade-large-tonnage Ni-Cu-PGE deposit, Nkomati. complex is regarded represent a satellite Bushveld and feeder an eroded magmatic reservoir southeast. Aeromagnetic surveys previous drilling indicated overall northwestern-downdip extension complex, but question what extent which expression can complete intrusion be found under cover northwest? Answering this, mineralogical, geochemical geochronological investigation borehole intersection whole at Little Mamre was carried out, using petrography, XRF, EPMA LA-ICP-MS U–Pb analyses zircons for age determination. Although total thickness rock units larger than southeast, emplacement, litho- mineral chemistry trends, alteration mineralogy style sulphide mineralisation are similar. amount on average less upper unit contains, more frequently, pegmatoidal sections, Chromitiferous Harzburgite has massive chromitite layers southeastern parts whereas gabbro(-norite) contain interstitial liquid with late-stage minerals. findings confirm that anvil-shaped cross section continues increased towards northwest shallow dip; although approaching deeper part igneous reservoir, compositions partially evolved. mineralogical consistency downdip supports situation multiple magma replenishment along flat-lying, northwest–southeast trending conduit, resulting evolved cumulus assemblage part.
